CLASSES Updated 3/7/07 For your convenience our classroom is fully equiped with irons, ironing boards, cutting mats and rulers. We also have Bernina sewing machines available for your use. Please reserve one when you register for your class- first come, first serve. Create A Class Your Choice of Date, Time & Project You and your family and friends can create a class just for you! Get away for a few hours or make a day or days of it. Days, weekends and evenings are all fine with us. You select the project, the date and time and give us a call. Please be sure to call us as far in advance as possible. (Sometimes this means 4-5 weeks in advance.) We need the time for scheduling staff, the instructors, the classroom and to be sure that any needed supplies will arrive on time. We want to have everything properly prepared to guarantee that you have a great time. Knitting Techniques Beyond Knit and Purl Thurs. Mar. 8 and 15, 1-5pm This class will gently take you beyond knitting and purling into the wonderful world of cables, yarn overs, decreases, increases and how they make beautiful knitted patterns and lace. They are really just different variations of the knit and purl stitches and appear to be much more difficult than they really are. You can practice these stitches while making a dishcloth or be brave and select a pattern and jump right in! We’ll be right here to help you. Class fee: $40.00 Square One Introduction to Beginning Quilting Fri. Mar. 9, 10am-5pm This is an absolute beginning quilting class which is an introduction to the wonderful world of quilting. You will spend the morning learning about rotary cutters, mats, rulers and rotary cutting safety. Accurate cutting is an absolute necessity for accurately piecing your quilt blocks. Learn about “squaring up” your fabrics, why the grain of fabric is important and finally cutting the pieces for your quilt block. During the afternoon, you will move ahead to sewing and practicing sewing accurate seams, what threads to use, to pin or not to pin, pressing and then sewing your pieces together into a complete quilt block. Your quilt block can later be made into a pillow, added to a shirt, framed or make it the first block of your very own first quilt! Class fee: $35.00 Needle Felting Sun. Mar. 11, 2-4pm Needle felting is achieved by taking wool roving and “poking at it” with barbed needles. This bonds the fibers together into a fabric. It can be used for embellishing on all kinds of fabrics from denim to knitted and crocheted items or you can even make 3-D shapes for pins and home decor items. It is so versatile! Learn how to use the different needles and tools, techniques and helpful hints and all the wonderful ways that you can use needle felting. You will be making a small design of your choice in class. Class fee: $10.00 The New Log Cabin Quilt Mon. March 12, 10am-5pm This method of making log cabin quilt blocks is so much faster, easier and accurate than previous methods. It’s all in the cutting with the special log cabin rulers. You are going to love this method of making log cabin blocks and you’ll be so happy with accurate results. Class fee: $35.00 From Sweatshirt to Jazzy Shirt Tues. March 13, 10am-5pm This is still our best selling garment pattern and the one most requested for a class project. You will start with a plain sweatshirt, add patches of fabrics and stitch them down. No precise cutting, no points to match, no ¼" seams and you don’t even have to sew straight! You will leave class with a jacket that is your own unique design and that you will be proud to wear and say “I made it myself!” Class fee: $35.00 Quick Brick Quilt As You Go Quilt Wed. Mar. 14, 10am-5pm This is the perfect pattern for a quilt that looks great, is warm and cuddly and is going to get a lot of use. You can use cottons, flannels, a combination of both, add batting or not. Learn how to accurately cut strips, piece them together and sew them to the backing “quilt as you go” style. That’s it and you are done! This is a great beginning class and an excellent “next step” after attending the beginning quilting class. Your choice of quilt size from throw to bed size. Class fee: $35.00 Beginning Free Motion Machine Quilting Sun. Mar. 18, 1-4 pm This class will start you from the very beginning of free motion machine quilting. You will learn about sewing machine settings, the proper feet, threads, designs, battings and more. Machine quilting is so popular and has many great applications, especially for the items that are used and laundered more frequently such as place mats and table runners. With the knowledge and a little practice you will be a pro in no time. Class fee: $15.00 Just A Little Pick-Me-Up Mon. March 19, 11-2pm Sometimes a big purse is just too much and too heavy! This little bag is just the right size for a few necessities when you can’t be weighted down. It is roomy and has 3 pockets to keep things nice and neat. This is also a great class for a little machine quilting and perfecting your binding techniques. Class fee: $15.00 How to Bind Your Quilts Fri. March 23, 10-2pm The finished edge of your quilts is so important. In this class, you will learn the different types of binding, how to calculate the amount of fabric required, how to cut and prepare the fabric, how to make perfect mitered corners and how to stitch it onto your quilt. Bring an unfinished, ready to bind, project to finish in class. You will no longer dread binding your quilts and you will have perfect results every time. Class fee: $20.00
Yes! You Can Knit Socks Sat. Mar. 24, 11-4pm Learn the Magic Loop method of sock knitting. No double pointed needles are needed; the knitting is done in the round with just one needle. Once you’ve worn hand knitted socks, your feet will be begging for more. With all the choices of yarns and colors, there’s just no end to the possibilities for hand knitted socks for every season. You will make a mini sock in class which you can use as a Christmas ornament or the beginning of a pair of baby socks. The Magic Loop method of knitting can be used for lots of other “in the round” knitting projects, too. Some knitting experience is required. Class fee: $25.00 What Happens When You Rub Sheep the Wrong Way Sun. Mar. 25, 1-4pm Roll up your sleeves, grab some wool roving and go to work in a nice warm tub of water. With a little rubbing and some bubble wrap you will have created water felted beads. These make great necklaces and bracelets and are beautiful when combined with other glass beads or stones. You will learn how to do the felting and make a bracelet in class. This technique can also be used to make felted flowers, stems and leaves and “roll and slice” beads as well. Class fee: $15.00 Boondoggle Quilting Mon. Mar. 26, 10-5pm This unique block shape lends itself to all kinds of wonderful possibilities. It’s not a 45 or 60 degree angle, we’re not sure what the angle is, but who cares? It makes great quilt blocks whether you start with whole fabrics, fabric strips, crazy cuts, orphan blocks or scraps. Scrap savers will especially like the quilts made with the Boondoggle, they are stunning. You will be able to show your friends and family that you knew all those small pieces would make the most beautiful quilt! The ruler is so well thought out that it has every line clearly marked without being confusing. In this class, you will learn how to use the Boondoggle ruler to make two different two-color blocks and put them into one 32" x 41" quilt top. During class, we will also show you lots of different uses for this great ruler. This class requires some previous rotary cutting and quilting experience. Class fee: $35.00 Speed Up - Curves Ahead! Tues. March 27, 10am-5pm That’s right, these curves won’t slow you down. Just a rotary cutter, mat, fabric and a sewing machine and you are ready to learn this exciting quilting technique. No rulers and no templates. The curves are cut free form, sewn and then trimmed to fit - no stress - it works every time. Add a unique border using the same method and you will have completed a great little wall hanging of a tulip design. We promise you will be so pleased with the results that you will be proud to hang it on your wall or give it as a gift. Class fee: $35.00 Square One Introduction to Beginning Knitting Thurs. Mar. 29, 10-5pm Knitting is everywhere. Get in on the fun! This class will get you acquainted with the terms, tools and techniques of the wonderful world of knitting. You will learn about different types of needles, sizes of needles, gauges of knitting and why it is important, weights of yarns and more. You will learn to cast on, knit a small swatch and bind off. This will give you all the skills needed to start knitting simple items. This class teaches the continental method of knitting. It is much faster and easier on your hands and would also be good for anyone wanting to learn this method of knitting. Class fee: $35.00 Introduction to the Wonderful World of Fabric Inks Tues. April 3, 1-5pm Fabric inks are great fun and oh, the possibilities! You can easily master these inks even if you don’t have an art background. Really! You can use any embroidery or applique pattern and turn an everyday design into one that says “Wow”. Use them to highlight the colors on fabrics for landscape quilts. When you wet your fabrics, you can achieve a batik look without all the toxic chemicals. This class will show you how to use the inks effectively and how to create the results you desire while making a small design in class. Class fee: $20.00 Quilting in Sections - How to Finish the Back Wed. April 11, 2-4 pm Quilting in sections whether you hand or machine quilt definitely has some terrific advantages. Hand quilting in sections is so much more portable and machine quilting in sections is so much easier not having to deal with all the bulk. The big question is how to finish the back attractively and what about quilt blocks set on point and sewn together diagonally? You will see a variety of ways to quilt in sections and how to make the back of your quilt neat and sturdy. This class will show the methods rather than being hands on. Class fee: $10.00 It’s Spring and Mama’s Gotta’ Have a New Bag! Thurs. April 12, 11-3pm Is your purse looking old and tired after the winter? Come and make a new one in fun, spring colors. Start with a ready made placemat, add a great coordinating fabric, embellish with beads and/or trims and you will be ready for a day on the town. Class fee: $20.00 The Friday the 13th Mystery Fri. April 13, 10-5pm Friday the 13th is a very special day that doesn’t happen very often. Let’s celebrate, throw caution to the wind and have fun quilting a mystery. We’ve got a pattern selected that is foolproof with no bad luck allowed! Class fee: $35.00 Knitting with Beads Sun. April 15, 1-5pm Glass beads are such a beautiful compliment to knitting and can be effectively added to everything from socks to hats to dainty amulets. You can create beautiful designs on the fronts of sweaters and tote bags as well as making them a part of fancy stitch patterns. Learn the techniques and you will want to add them to all your knitted items. You will be making a small amulet in class. Class fee: $20.00

Class Policies:
*Our classes are designed to provide education while still having fun. You are here to learn, so don’t hesitate to ask questions. We love lots of questions. There are never any silly questions, only silly mistakes if you are afraid to ask! We were all beginners at one time.
*Please don’t hesitate to sign up for a class because of weather concerns. If the weather is severe, we will reschedule the class. Generally, if area schools are closed, we reschedule.
*We plan staffing and supplies for each class, therefore you must register and pay for your class in advance.
*If you cancel after registering and paying for your class, the class fee is not refundable. You will receive store credit only. Sorry, no refunds or store credits issued for no shows.
*A model of each class project is in the shop.
*Each class has a supply list. This list will be provided upon registration and payment for the class.
*For day-long classes or classes that extend beyond the lunch time, a lunch break has been included in the class time.
*We have Bernina sewing machines for classroom use on a first come first serve basis. You can reserve one when you pay for your class. It’s a great time to try a Bernina!
*Please be on time with your required supplies, bring your enthusiasm and sense of humor. You will learn wonderful new techniques while having a great time.
